Bret: We Are Proud Of You

Bret graduated high school and we went to Chicago to look at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. At the same time, the President of Kansas State University contacted us to try to get Bret to go there because of his past success in high school debate. Bret decided to go to University of Chicago. He struggled his first year but received tutoring and managed to get good grades while majoring in Political Science. When he came home for the summer, he said that he wasnt sure he wanted to go back to UOC. We had a long talk over dinner one night and it turned out he didnt have a car to get around - so we gave him our used Pontiac and got Marge a new car.

His sophomore year went well and he applied to be a page in Washington DC for the summer for Senators Nancy Kassebaum and Sam Brownback. He was selected by both and chose Brownback. He also worked closely with Paul Ryan. At the end of the summer, he decided that he didn't want to be in Political Science anymore and was switching to Economics. The following summers, he worked for a law firm in Washington and a Wall Street Brokerage.

Upon graduation he worked in London, England and then got a consulting position with McKinsey in San Francisco. After a couple of years at McKinsey, Bret applied and was accepted to Harvard Business School. McKinsey told Bret that he didnt need an MBA but Bret was insisting he go, so McKinsey paid for his tutition provided he return to McKinsey after graduation. Bret graduated from Harvard with exceptional honors.

Years later, Bret accepted a VP position with VMWare in San Francisco and got married and had a daughter. Then Bret was offered a VP position with Athena Health in Boston, which he accepted, and is now the COO of Athena. He has done well and we are very proud of him.
